I am an Air Apostle,a volunteer for our local Catholic radio station, 1380 AM Real Life Radio. Last night I was out at the 1380 tent at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Country Fair. My job was to sit in the tent and…well…read my book.
Most people are focus on the other activities at the fair that they could careless that 1380 was around. Anyway, we had a giveaway, some free bumper stickers and magnets, a sign-up sheet for potential Air Apostles (1380 can always use more! Go to Ichthus for free if you serve 5 hours as an Air Apostle!) We also had a little basket with Tootsie Rolls & Smarties. Our little tent was next to the big tent housing the Variety Auction, live music, and carnival games. There was excellent food being served at the back corner of the big tent. As I mentioned previously, I mostly just sat in my chair and read my book, Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis De Sales. People would come by and sign up for the giveaway. People would come over for free magnets. Most of the people who came by came over to talk to my tent buddy, Deacon Matt.
During the times that I didn’t have my nose in the book, I observed the world around me. I wonder, how on earth did I miss the “free eyeliner and straightener day”!! All of these young girls looked the same…eyeliner, straightened hair, flip flops, cell phone, etc. Oh well.
Later in the evening, a couple of girls came out of the big tent and to our little tent. (Those words really don’t even convey the difference in the sizes of the tents!) They came over and asked, “What do we do?” This question kinda confused me. They had just come from the tent of carnival game and such, so I reckon they were asking me about how to play the game, or something. Well, I explained to them that we had the giveaway, but that you had to be 18 or older. They obviously were not. I told them if they had an older friend or family member who would be interested they could come by and enter to win. One of the girls pointed to the basket of candy. “How do I get a Tootsie Roll?” (I may not have quoted her exactly, but that was the idea she was conveying.) ”Oh!” I replied. “All you have to do is ask!”
Think on that. I’ve gotta to put a pause on this thought to go play with my mom and daughter!
I’m reading the Introduction to the Devout Life, too! I just started it.
